Wiltipoll Breed and Flock Details
Wiltshire Horn sheep first entered Australia from the UK in 1952, and in 1970, Leo Harwood founded the first Wiltshire Horn Stud, Bara-Simbil, in Victoria; it is these sheep that formed the foundation of the Wiltshire Horn breed as it exists today in Australia. There are many selection criteria for breeders of Wiltshire Horns, but the most important breeding regulation is that the sheep must FULLY shed their fleece annually. Hence purebred Wiltshire Horn sheep are never shorn. For more detailed information on the breed refer to the association website. www.wiltshirehorn.asn.au
Although Wiltshire Horn breeders have been experimenting with cross breeding for decades, the official development of the Wiltipoll breed in Australia was the brainchild of Annie and Tom Hughes, Kars Station Broken Hill, NSW. Annie has worked tirelessly on behalf of all breeders of Wiltipoll sheep to develop and promote the Australian Wiltipoll Association Inc and the merits of a polled sheep with all the characteristics of the Wiltshire Horn. The breed has been developed under the guidance of CHS Dolling following the same selection criteria as the Poll Dorset and the Poll Merino.www.wiltipoll.com
Wonoka Wiltshire Horn Stud follows the standards set by the Australian Wiltipoll Association Inc in its backcrossing program.
The crossbred progeny are joined with purebred Wiltshire Horns until 5th cross is achieved. The joining of a 5th cross ewe to a 5th cross ram results in a Class A1 Wiltipoll. Wonoka Partnership are the only performance recorded Wiltshire Horn and Wiltipoll flock in South Australia. |
