Wonoka Wiltshire Horns & Wiltipolls

The Wonoka Stud is the oldest Wiltshire Horn Sheep Stud in South Australia. The first registered sheep were purchased from The Harwood’s Victorian-based Bara Simbil Stud in 1993.

Rapid genetic gain has been made following the introduction of performance-recorded sheep from the Clifton Hills Stud (John Bedwell & Trish Ballantyne), Gippsland, Victoria in 1996.

In 1998 we began cross breeding with Perendale ewes from Bob Jolly, South Australia and so began the foundation of the Wiltipoll flock we have today.  Since 1999 we have developed a further three lines of Wiltipoll sheep based on Poll Dorset ewes from the Kentish Downs stud of Rob Martin, (Parawa, S A), White Suffolk from  the Leachim Stud at Snowtown, SA and White Dorpers from Kaya and Idavale Stud in Western Australia.

Wonoka Wiltpolls are not related to any other Wiltipoll flocks as no Wiltipoll sheep have been introduced from other breeders to ensure the genetic diversity of the breed once the development phase is complete.
In 2009 a Coolamon Park Wiltipoll ram will be used for the first time to increase the shedding ability and polledness of the White Suffolk line.

The development of the Wonoka Wiltipoll with infusion and selection of high performance bloodlines from each of these studs has produced a highly productive flock.

The 2008 flock structure now consists of two main bloodlines:

  • Registered Wiltipolls
  • Wiltipoll / White Dorper Composites
